Three Tips for Clearing that Junk Drawer- Really!
Everyone has one; the infamous junk drawer. Make this drawer work for you with these simple tips:
Every space needs to have a purpose, the junk drawer is no different. Take a step back. Where is the drawer? Kitchen, garage, office? The location often gives a clue as to how you can tackle it.
Start with a clean slate
Empty the drawer out and take inventory. What the heck was in there? You will likely discover most of the contents were trulyjunk. Discard the junk, all of it.
Next, think about the location. What do you do there? Keep items that serve a purpose in the room you are in. You don't need garden shears in the bathroom but you will need a stapler in the office. Edit your contents to serve a purpose in the room. If you are in a mudroom keep utilitarian items handy; tiny flashlight, pen or sharpie, band-aid etc. These are the items you are sometimes desperate for as you stumble in from outside. Every room serves a purpose and your junk drawer should reflect that purpose.
Keep it tidy
I am a big proponent of drawer inserts and organizers. These handy gadgets prevent you from stuffing drawers beyond capacity. Pick one up that fits your drawer and keep only what the insert will contain; nothing more. If you have a surplus of items it means they belong elsewhere. Keeping your drawer at capacity but not beyond will let the contents serve your needs whenever they arise. This will turn any junk drawer into problem solver instead of a problem itself
